Why I designed my course completely differently
First, a confession.. I’ve spent almost 9,000 USD on online courses without even finishing 1 of them.
The courses are all well-designed, and the teachers made sure they include every small details from the ground up.
Their intention is good, but they’ve missed one thing.
Students want efficiency, especially in online learning. Their attention span is short.
And more importantly, they want practicality. They want to be able to apply it in real life. People want to get better but they don’t have 2 hours a day to practise.
Why lots of beginners stop doing calligraphy even though they enjoyed their first class
It is because they struggle when practising on their own. Muscle memory takes time to build. But if they can’t produce something decent shortly after, they get frustrated and move on.
Hence the keys of my course:
Bite size. Most common phrases requested by beginner students. Demonstration of the sentence first, explain later.

Non-beginners! Whether you have taken a beginner’s class, or you are self-taught. The course does not cover basic skills such as strokes, but I will demonstrate useful phrases and walk you through areas to pay attention to by examples.
-
You can take the course whether you practise dip pen or brush pen calligraphy. I am demonstrating with a brush pen for simplicity only - less hassle and I can write faster. The focus of the course is on the lettering structure instead of technicality.
-
Most online courses focus on theories instead of demonstrating practical phrases. While fundamentals are essential, self-paced online learning can be very challenging if you’re not motivated enough. That’s why my course focuses on practicality - by showing you exactly how to write common phrases, then break it down into details so you can learn by example.
In this way you are more likely to produce something useful efficiently. Not to mention you will receive personal feedback from me! It’s this sense of satisfaction that would keep you going!

First of all this is not to replace an in-person beginner’s class! I have taught lots of beginners and there are things that the teacher can only spot when he/she sees it. This course targets non-beginners who already know the basics, but are struggling with writing words / phrases.
While you can benefit from an in-person beginner’s class, students often find it hard when they are practising on their own afterwards. When the frustration builds up, they tend to give up on calligraphy even though they are still very much interested. That is exactly why I designed the course - to provide ongoing 1-on-1 guidance.

Most intermediate courses often focus more on complex flourishing which could be a bit intimidating for beginners at this stage, when they are still trying to put the letters together.
Calligraphy is not something that you can go from taking a 3-hour beginner’s workshop straight to intermediate class. Plenty of practice is needed and muscle memory takes time to build. This is unfortunately when most people give up as unguided practice could be very challenging.
My course focuses on teaching through practical phrases. I believe the more you’re going to use it, the more motivated you will be in practising.

You may email it to me. 3 rounds of email feedback are provided and there is no time limit on when you submit them.

Anything! One thing to note is I’ll be reviewing your work and making suggested changes, but I will not be writing the whole sentence from scratch! That means you can’t email me and say “Can you show me how to write Enjoy your retirement Katherine?”.
The whole idea is for you to have a go at it first, then learn as I spot areas to improve. The ultimate goal is to learn how to improve your own work by yourself.
